J/80 does it all, with thrilling 15 knot rides under spinnaker or relaxed sunset cruises with mainsail only. SAILING WORLD rated J/80 as easier to handle, less intimidating, safer and better suited for sailing offshore than other modern sportboats tested. 

J/80s are now sailing in 30 fleets in 12 countries, with large fleets existing in North America, Europe and China. 

We offer the exciting sportboat certification class aboard the venerable J/80. She's fast, fun, capable and with her 10' cockpit, the perfect teaching platform for learning the next level of performance sailing.

You'll be sailing in the middle of the toughest inland body of water on the planet, Swan Francisco Bay. 

In order to get you prepared for this challenging course the pre-requisites are:

ASA 101 Basic Keelboat Sailing
ASA 103 Basic Coastal Cruising
ASA 105 Coastal Navigation (in progress)
Minimum 4 charters on the Andrews 21

You'll need to have good wet weather gear by the time you get to this class. Foulies are a must as we'll be sailing in the central portion of SF Bay where the winds can gust to 30+ knots and the Bay Chop build to 5+ feet. 

Once your achieve this certification you need to complete 3 charters with you as skipper of record prior to going north of the Bay Bridge. Build your skills well so by the time you reach the "Slot" you're have the confidence and capability to keep you, your crew and your boat safe. Remember everyone on board is depending on you and your skills.

    • Sail To Destination Efficiently

    • Sailing Cross-Current

    • Navigational Aids

    • Local Hazards

  • When to Reef

  • Finite Jib & Main setup for speed & control

  • Adjusting to High-Wind On the Fly (ie: Shifting Gears)

Day 2

  • Sailing Location/Itinerary for the day

  • Homework Review (Q&A Session)

  • Emergency Procedures

  • Proper Setup for High Winds
    - Backstay, Boomvang, Traveller,
      Fairleads, Reefing, Jib Selection

  • Forecast Conditions using Tide & Current Tables & Weather References

  • Motoring Practice with Spring Lines

  • Sailing Skills: Heave-to, Reefing, MOB

Day 4

  • Sailing Location/Itinerary for the day

  • Chart 1 and Navigation Rules Review

  • Sailing in Chop - How to Steer

  • Motoring in heavy winds

J/80 27' Keelboat

ASA Test: no

Certification : Spinnaker SB1

Prerequisite : ASA 101, 103 & 4 charters

Sportboat is offered one weekend Monthly two days 11am - 4pm. Midweek Mon-Thurs 11am - 4pm.
 $1295 Weekends (two consecutive weeks, 4 days total)  or $1245 Midweek (4 consecutive days)
