46' Monk Sedan

46' Monk Sedan

DALAI LAMA was built at the Matsumoto Shipyard in North Vancouver BC in 1953. Sam Matsumoto built boats in Prince Rupert long before World War II, but sadly was interned during the war years.  After the war he established Matsumoto Shipyards in the Dollarton section of North Vancouver and became a leader in aluminum boat construction.  The yard closed in 1989, but Sam left his mark on the industry.  Using a one-off Ed Monk design, he crafted this beautiful 46' sedan with white oak frames and planked with 1 ½ Philippine Mahogany.  She was completely re-fitted from 1999 to 2002 by George McNeilly, repowered in 2009 and re-planked over 80% in 2019 by her current owner, using the same  1 ½ Philippine Mahogany.  No expense has been spared as she has been lovingly cared for her whole life.

As you approach M/V DALAI LAMA you notice her beautiful sheer complimented by her swept back house and teak trim throughout.  Her portlights are tinted with gold UV heat reflective material.  Moving aft along her portside you step up and then down onto her beautifully trimmed Philippine Mahogany and Teak fantail.  New canvas adorns her upper helm and after deck.  Climbing up the ladder onto her flybridge you see her beautiful appointments including her upper helm with modern electronics and gauges, but with a Vintage look and feel.  Stepping down through the companionway you enter her main salon, completely trimmed in mahogany and teak with settee to port and starboard.  The Starboard settee slides out to an athwartships queen. Forward and down two steps you enter the gust berth forward with two single bunks and head to port.  Turning now and heading aft through the main salon you step down to the galley and another settee to port slides out to a queen bed as well.  The modern galley is trimmed in solid mahogany and features modern new appliances and appointments. The fine craftsmanship displayed in this yacht won her "Boat of the Show" at the 2002 Vancouver Wooden Boat Festival and "Best Power Boat 30' and Above" that same year.  She truly is amazing!
