I just graduated Basic Coastal Cruising - Now What?

You've taken the classes, passed all the tests and now you're ready to go sailing! Here's some tips on moving on to your next phase in your sailing life...being the one in charge, the skipper.

• First off, remember to keep learning. Just because you've reached this point doesn't mean you're done. I often say the best thing about sailing is that it is hard to do.

• Learn how to navigate. Knowing where you are at is critical in sailing and this knowledge makes your voyages, both long and short, less stressful and more enjoyable for your crew. I suggest taking the ASA 105 "Coastal Navigation Class."  This is a self paced-self study DVD based program that is thorough, concise and best of all, once your pass the test you are certified in Coastal Navigation!  I've found that if you follow this program carefully, do all the practice plots and test you WILL pass the written exam.

• Be strategic in your planning on who you sail with and when. Remember, the first time you scare your crew is the last time they will sail with you and may be the last time they ever speak to you. No one likes being scared on a boat. Sailing in SF Bay can be challenging due to the high winds, strong tides and many, many commercial ships, none of which can maneuver around your small boat.
