J/80 Sportboat Track
Build confidence and mastery on one modern performance platform from your first lesson through independent J/80 sailing on San Francisco Bay.
Consistency Builds Confidence.
Most sailing programs move students from boat to boat. Every change requires time learning a new cockpit, sail plan, deck layout, and handling system. Our philosophy is different.

One Boat. One Connected Curriculum.
From Basic Keelboat 1 through Basic Keelboat 2 and Basic Coastal Cruising, students remain aboard the J/80.
Every lesson reinforces the last. Instead of repeatedly learning a different boat, students use that time to improve sail trim, steering, communication, seamanship, and judgment.
Less time learning the boat. More time learning to sail.
Why the J/80?
Responsive enough to reward proper technique. Forgiving enough to build confidence. Capable enough to remain exciting long after the first class.
A Modern Platform
Learn on one of the world’s most respected modern performance keelboats from the very beginning.
Continuous Learning
One boat and one connected curriculum allow each lesson to build directly upon the previous one.
Skills That Transfer
Develop techniques that carry naturally into cruising yachts, racing keelboats, chartering, and ownership.
Platform Mastery means every hour on the water moves you forward.
Your Progression
Each stage adds new skills while reinforcing the boat handling, communication, seamanship, and decision-making developed before it.
Competence Before Certification.
Certification is an important milestone. Real confidence comes from instruction, repetition, independent sailing, and continued experience.

Questions About the Track
Do I need previous sailing experience?
No. The J/80 Sportboat Track begins with Basic Keelboat 1 and is designed to build skills in a deliberate progression.
Why stay on the same boat?
Boat continuity reduces the time spent relearning layouts and systems. Students can focus instead on technique, judgment, communication, and seamanship.
When can I charter a J/80 independently?
Charter eligibility depends on successfully completing the required training, demonstrating the necessary skills, and meeting Spinnaker’s current experience and recency requirements. Generally, you will be sailing as the 'Captain of Record' after successful completion of Basic Coastal Cruising on this track and sailing anywhere East of the Golden Gate Bridge after completion your "HighWind" Endorsement!
What comes after the J/80?
The J/105 provides a natural next step into larger-boat training because it shares the responsive sailing character and design philosophy of the J/80.
